Battle of the Year 2011 - The Cyphers

My favourite part of shooting BOTY is to be down in the crowd amongst the B-Boys and B-Girls who have come to see the event. The energy is incredible to have 11,000 breakers all in the same arena from all over the world!! Alot of people who haven't been to Battle of the Year just think it's a show, but over the last 4 years I've seen some nuts battles in the crowd and it's pretty much non stop circles for the whole event. Also the bboys from the participating crews will usually be down battling and breaking in the circles after their shows. If you don't know now you know suckas!!

3d adventures in the forest...

Went for a quick whip out to the forest today with my girl and a bunch of equipment to continue working on the difficult task of shooting 3d forest scenes. There is nothing easy about working on these sort of spots and aside from the fact that it's a 1km walk to the location, once you get there you have to do battle with leeches which will leave you bleeding for hours as we both found out. For these shots I used a 3 light setup of speedlight strobes, one on the ground in each shot and two on stands, the key with a silver reflective umbrella and fill a shoot through umbrella. All attached to PW flex tt5 units. Flash in each shot is manually popped with the mini tt1 in my hand and the cameras set to 1/2 a second exposure triggered using my fingers on each camera and the tt1 between my thumb and forefinger. I opted not to use a synced cable release between the two cameras this time so I could fit them closer together. The result is an image with less 3d pop that's more comfortable to view. To view in 3d you will need to cross your eyes and focus to see a third 3d image appear in between the two others.

Green by gelling background strobe (behind Soli) to enhance green ambient of carpark lights. Soli did an awesome job as it was freezing and the material was playing up but we got the job done in the end :D

My fiancee has made it downunder so after being away from Aussie for the past 6 months we are now both here for a while. As you could imagine we're super stoked so we celebrated by doing a photoshoot on some slippery rocks with a perilous drop on either side :D Soli did a great job of balancing and making sure I didn't break my leg in 100 places down one of the gaps. Plus she looks super hot!!

Basically I've been working on some 3d photography for the past few months, using a stereoscopic 3d rig which I used two identical syncronized SLR cameras side by side with matching lenses. It was a bit of a challenge to me. I feel like to really shoot 3d perfectly you need two brains because you need to analyze so many complex objects within the scene in each camera to make sure it's perfect. Unfortunately I don't have 2 brains and my 1 brain is struggling at maximum so I'm sorta stuck. My girl gave me heaps of help shooting this stuff as it's super tedious and in order to get a perfect 3d shot of a person they've gotta be in a specific position sometimes which is pretty stressy. Solaleh did such a good job though and she looks so good in 3d!!!!
There's a few different ways to view 3d:
1. Crossview (pics with 2 images) - you need to cross your eyes so left eye views right image and right eye views left image. You cross your eyes and once you get it right a third image will be between the other two which will be in full focus and full 3d. It's tricky, and it takes about 5-10 minutes to learn - hold your finger between ur eyes if ur having trouble crossing them and get a bit of distance between you and the screen. It's not a joke. It looks incredible, full colour 3d no glasses, just viewing technique.

Honestly though just cross ur eyes and move back a bit and try and cross them so u see a third image in the middle. If you can see it and it's blurry you need to squint. Reducing the aperture of your eye by squinting will bring more into focus so your eye can snap focus. Download the pics to your hard drive and view them as a slideshow so the black takes up the full screen.

2. Anaglyph (red and blue pics) - you need Red / Cyan glasses like from the old school 3d movies. When you use them the pics will look insane but in black and white, which is still super cool. Maybe there's some sitting around your house I dunno how cool you are.

Did up some new press shots for my OG homeboy Dj Danny T the other night who has been ripping up the international scene lately as well owning at #1 on the Aria Club Charts in Aussieland. He's got a bunch of new releases on the way in so we decided to mix up his shots to get a nice selection for a broad range of tracks which will be out soon. These days with press shots for musicians you need to be thinking all the way from web thumbnails to posters and album artwork to street press covers right from the word go, as there are a huge number of delivery and promotion methods available to artists. For Danny as a very well established artist this shooting is par for the course, but for an up and coming performer having a good shot could be the difference between a full article in street press and no mainstream press before a show.

I think it's important for the culture to record these current and upcoming legends in clear detail. Last night the river in my city Brisbane peaked after breaking it's banks and basically flooded people's homes to hell. This is something really rare to occur in this town which has been under drought conditions for over ten years. These pics don't do justice to the amount of damage that has been done to people's homes, but I hope they shock you into action either with your hands if you're local to help, or through donations to the victims if you're out of reach.
Please give generously to the flood appeals if you can. The people who have had their lives screwed need your help.

Qupid Summer 2010-2011

Headed into Goa - India in October to shoot with my chick for Qupid's current range of Bikini's. Was a pretty interesting experience traveling in India and shooting there was challenging to say the least, trashed $1000 worth of equipment due to random gale force winds and a huge storm that rolled in. We were pretty much on standby the whole 10 days we were there, waiting for breaks in the cloud cover (and drinking super cheap spirits / lighting fireworks) but ended up getting the job done. All up I reckon we got about 2 hours of sun over the 10 days. The weather of the world is mental right now!!! It wasn't even monsoon season...

On a technical note the first frame was the most crazy I guess, shot using a slightly off camera 540ez synced using pw flex tt5 f3.5 @ 1/2500 second. Took a few goes to fire perfectly but got it to work after all.

Six Books - Prophet Rayza

Did the new press and album artwork for Prophet Rayza's new EP, 6 Books tonight which is about to be released by Born Fresh. The first shot we lit with candles (yep for real) and a gelled flash in the background on a radio trigger. The second and third are just some extras, second simple bare head flash from above and the other is a high ISO candle lit shot.

Art direction by Tom Horn aka Tom Thum aka Tommy Illfigga aka 1/2 of Born Fresh. Just goes to show that you don't need expensive lighting equipment (bar the radio trigger and flash at the back which we coulda done without) to create dynamic lighting with today's high ISO processors and noise reduction in post. The chance of burning down the set with a speedlight is considerably lower tho I guess than a flame :D

Bboy Mamoose, AKA Manu Manuva took out the event in some tight 1 on 1 battles scoring his first ever trophy and gear from Red Bull and Damage Clothing, and Extreme Skates, and the heads rolled out, Versastyle, Garvin, Brhino, Flix, DJ Bacon, Kelskee, Johnny Drama and the HMK Killaz. Chyeeeeeeh! LOVE IT.

I see some pretty hectic stuff from time to time. Valley Fiesta 2010 was no exception, I was commissioned by Strut N' Fret to do an editorial piece on the 3 day event, which included everything from a high fashion champagne breakfast, to an underground hip hop stage, to a flaming Pyrophone Juggernaut and everything in between.

Shooting a festival solo is kind of like being Rambo, a one man army, because there are always events going on at the same time and in order to capture the precise moment in a live performance you really need to be there the whole set, which you can't be. Here are some bits.

Malaysia Island Time

Sola and I have been planning to go away together for over a year to have a holiday, and a little over a week ago we managed to pull a last minute plan together to get some time off work and make it happen. We organised to go out to this little island in the Perhentians in Malaysia to go diving and take some pics just for fun and for Qupid swimsuits which has some beautiful bikinis which look amazing especially on her!!!!

If you know me you'll know the deal, Sola is the most important girl in my life and it was a huge deal for me to photograph her and spend some time together. We had the best time ever out there. I'm going to be posting 6 posts for the 6 days we were out and 6 pics in each set.

Miranda, stargazing, black milk

Went out for a quick test shoot with one of my friends Miranda tonight just for some fun. We had this new swimsuit from Black Milk, so I tried to recreate something similar from the Rainman shoot with the stars in the background to mimic the print on the garment. Kind of missed the mark a bit and it was really hard to shoot as it was about 6oC 2hrs out West where we shot, (so as to miss the city lights in the sky and shoot with no street lights). Again the moon wasn't out so getting a good silhouette against the sky was easy so long as no ambient light in the frame.

Shot using Pocketwizard TT5 / TT1, 580ex w' shoot through umbrella and bare head 540ez. ISO 3200 to catch the stars and a 15-30 second exposure. Poor Miranda was frozen stiff but at least we got a couple of cool snaps. I'll probably try this shoot again in the next week now that I understand the system better. Just have to hope the sky stays clear and still no moon. The last shot was a last ditch before Miranda froze to death, but I shoulda shot it much longer exposure to catch more stars...

Sophee in Black Milk

A quick shoot of Sophee with the help James Lillis of Black Milk the designer of the leggings, bodysuits and jackets used in these shots.

I've been shooting alot of nature locations lately, Brisbane is green, and I think from traveling to actual cities (AKA more than 2 million people) I've realised finding urban, street looking locations in a city made of sticks and trees is a mission. I guess it's just about strengths and weaknesses. Brisbane has amazing pockets of forest and rainforest and beautiful nature throughout the city and I see that as a strength now.

These are very simple lighting setups, single 580ex set to manual and wired to camera left and shoot through umbrella. Sophee did a great job, looks wonderful and is great to work with!! Stay tuned for more shoots with her in the future :D

Rainman, bigger picture shoot pt 2

Some additional frames shot for Rainman for his upcoming album which will be announced soon.

Was the perfect night for shooting the sky, as there was not a cloud and also no moon so the stars were looking bright as. Ray had to stand super still for a 13 second exposure so as not to ghost the image. No moon also meant less ghosting in his face (double eyes etc from ambient exposure mixed with flash). Shot with off cam PW TT5 on a 540ez bare head set to 1/128, iso 3200, and flex TT5 on camera also. Just a dash of light painting in one of the pics with my nokia flashlight just for fun. We saw a bunch of shooting stars but didn't manage to catch one. Thanks to Amanda Heelan as assist also.

Tommy Ill - chillin under a bridge

Just a few pics testing out some range on the Pocketwizard TT1 / TT5 system still, got them firing with a Vivitar 285hv at about 70M consistently. These are all shot with the rim light on RHS of frame a million miles away (Vivitar 285hv on TT5) and a 540ez on 1/128th power into a reflective umbrella camera left about 3m from Tom. Shot on a Canon 50mm 1.4 between 1.4 and 1.8.

The first image was pretty death, shooting above Tom with this pole nearly cracking my skull each time he's trying this pole freeze cos it's shaking like crazy, my hands are holding the cam with my body just off it around the other side of the thing with no hands. to balance...deeatthhh cool angle tho just to try out...

A bit more experimenting with the Flex TT5 and TT1 system of Pocket Wizard radio triggers for my friends the Crate Creeps who have just dropped a new album. Was a misty night so I had a bit of a play with firing a 540ez straight into the lens through the fog from about 30m away with consistent results. Also the final shot of Tom Thum doing a flare is shot at 1/1000 second using a 580ex mk1 with reflector umbrella as key and a 540ez in the background.
And also a special dance spectacular from Bboy / Dj Butcher in the 3rd pic...pure poise and elegance...

Bit of a shoot today with Gav. Working with the Flex PW system. Pretty solid when used with my 580ex mk1 and super solid with the 540EZ which gets a mad boost of power somehow I think. A bit fickle tho with some misfires and I need to work them out a little more to get sustainable high speed sync and hypersync.

Winner....JINJO CREW of Korea!!! Some incredible battles. Crazy audience and a new system of judging which was trialled for the event (see the pic of the laptop).
I had the best time in Korea, I really didn't want to leave, and to work alongside great photographers Jay Lewis, Maurice van der Meijs, Mason Rose and with the R16 crew was such a pleasure. I'm so lucky to be able to work with my friends shooting B-boying at it's highest level.

Last night was the Pre-party and popping and locking qualifiers. A combination of two amazing things and everyone was feeling the party vibes!!!
Also here is a picture of Spain's Fusion Rockers crew, shot using pocket wizard flex TT5's in high speed sync mode at 1/800th of a second, with an old canon 540ez and a 580ex set both to full power. My focus was a bit out but this system has potential for some cool high speed flash shots I think.

Last year I was flown over to cover the R16 Invitational B-Boy Masters in Korea which was insanely good. They basically invite 16 of the best crews in the world to come and do shows, battle and enjoy Korea which is a HIGHLY ENJOYABLE place. Seoul is basically like stepping into the set of a movie set in the future and the moves you see at this event are from another dimension!!! Korea is so deep into B-Boying that you can barely switch through 3 channels on the TV without catching a breaker being interviewed, in a music video or just on one of the shows. I'm pretty sure this year is gonna be incredible too!!! Here are some pics of mine from last year's event that were run on the R16 website www.R16korea.com.

Plutonic of Muph and Plutonic fame commissioned me to do a new press shot for him while they were on tour up here in Brisbane. I was obviously stoked as I've been wanting to shoot him for ages and I know he checks out my blog (yeahhhh Pluto and Joskee!!!!!). Anyway we had a super tight timeframe shooting in 35 mins (including travel) between the Muph and Plutonic set and the previous set with Jess Harlen. I had a slight idea about a location and we bashed out a couple of different looks on this jetty down the road while being knocked around by the wake of citycats cruising past :P, and managed to get Pluto back to the Hi Fi with 7 minutes before they did their show!! Which by the way was DOPE!!!

Did some press shots and album artwork shootings for my close friends the Crate Creeps for their album which is about to be released, (featuring dope Australian talent and U.S. artist Rakaa Iriscience from Dilated Peoples). I've heard their debut album and it sounds dope, super professional and it's definitely worth checking out even if you're not deep into hip hop. Shark Island - first time watershoot

Today we woke up at 6.30am to a black, rainy, cold as frozen hell icicle pop - and decided to try and shoot Shark Island from the water. We got down to Cronulla in the dark and the swell was up, the wind was not cranking yet and it was on for an ISO3200 surf shoot :P on the 5d mk2 of local photographer Steve Jones who kindly lent it to me along with his aquatech housing. I dunno how we did it but I managed to catch these pics from the channel through the rain, although it was screwing with the focus like crazy. All in all super cold, super fun.

Basically the following applied to this shoot:

1. everything I had was borrowed - dunes wetsuit, swimfins, camera, housing, bed I slept in the night before.

2. I had a sprained ankle so I could only walk like Dr House but somehow I could swim ok thru the shorey to get out to the channel.
3. Friggin cold.

Glen Sullivan - Dunes Wetsuits Concept shoot

Right now I'm staying down in Cronulla in NSW with Glen Sullivan, one of the riders on the Dunes Wetsuits bodyboard team waiting for some swell to hit Shark Island so we can try and get some shots. Tonight we decided to try out a concept Glen came up with to shoot him in the wetsuit outside in the cold, using hot water to create a steam effect. We only had one flash (as it's a surf trip and I wanted to travel light and didn't plan for this shoot originally) so we had to use long exposures and multiple pops of the one flash unit (in front and behind) by Lisa Pulsford. We also managed to score a rare event where this super cool ring effect occurs around the moon. Anyway, here are the results!!! enjoy :)

I was stoked to see a couple of my pics being run as part of the preview on the Red Bull Illume website last night so I grabbed a couple of screengrabs :) Mainly though I was stoked at seeing the other photographer's work up there. Some truly amazing images of extreme sports around the world, some of them will absolutely take your breath away. The ones which most impressed me were the ski, snowboard, diving and basejump pics. And I'm pretty sure I saw my friends Ray Demski and Stev Bonhage's work in there too looking fantastic!!!

B-BOY Exhibition @ THE FORT

The B-Boy exhibition brings together 3 years of Breaking (Breakdance) photography by Conan Whitehouse, a Brisbane based photographer who has been traveling the world photographing the world’s best dancers on his documentary journey. “My aim is to capture the style and aesthetic of each individual Breaker and make a historical record of that element of style.”
The exhibit will be shown in collaboration with acclaimed graffiti artists, SOFLES, YUINHUZ, BENNY GLOUCESTER and. Representing the link between different elements of Hip Hop culture worldwide.

Conan Whitehouse is a B-boy turned photographer and for the past three years has been traveling throughout Australia, Germany, France, Korea and the USA photographing for Red Bull and World Championship events.

More light painting experiments. Was hard because the weather was sketchy - raining pretty heavily for most of the shoot and I was also heavily hungover...but Barbie did awesome - a former pro gymnast, such a pleasure to shoot and heaps of fun!! I'm gonna try and put more pre-shoot prep in next time and grid out the scene, maybe with no model. See how we go :) Thanks to Bass on the assist too!!

Some of you may or may not know that I sometimes moonlight as a bodyboard photographer, with pretty good success mostly, but mainly success in the form of an awesome time hanging out with and meeting some incredible people. This was a successful trip fun and wave wise but for some reason none of the pics ever got run despite the mags telling us they would??? Anyway, the riders you see here are Sacha Specker (South Africa), Glen Sullivan (Cronulla) and Jayden Hunt (Victoria). All are insane riders and great people to cruise with!!!

Another dope event put on by DJ Bacon and Liones in King George Square, Brisbane. Great turnout of crowd with the venue getting fully packed and all the B-boys and B-girls getting down to Bacon and Dj Mathmatics on the cuts!!! Congrats to HMK who took out the final in a heated battle with Skill at Will. Big word up also to the old school heads who rolled up to both battle and support, including international mega supastar B-boy Busk and super ill gangsta player B-boy orbit and also crazy dope style bandit B-boy Brhino of Fre Agentz, one of the most attractive crews in the world (ye my crew haha).

Tanya has 11 letters in her last name, is 6ft tall and comes from Moscow...Tanya requires many more than 11 letters to explain how fantastically good looking she is but I'll let the 11 photos do the talking. A great little last minute shoot organized with the lending generosity of a few high end local designers, namely James Lillis of Black Milk (http://jameslillis.bigcartel.com/) and Gail Sorronda (http://gailsorronda.blogspot.com/), and of course the killer combo of Elana Mullaly makeup artist and Sarah Birchley stylist.

Scouting the locations the night before to find out how long it would take security to get there was a good investment of time because I could photograph and use for reference all the interesting bits (see previous post) and suss out any security guards there (security is a super annoying problem for shooting even in public in Brisbane). We did cop security but only on the very last shot, so good work us. The guard tried to tell us the location (which was a scummy looking carpark door fronting the street) was a "secure state facility" and that "the Premier of Queensland wouldn't be very happy if she drove up and found us there". The guy was pretty easy to persuade to leave us alone a while longer as he appeared to be having a minor heart attack from running down to us from his station :P.

I guess we will never know whether we would have made the Premier happy or not tho cos she didn't rock up. I'm sure that if she did she would have tried to lock us out of the already locked garage even though we were already outside (inside joke for people in Brisbane who's nightlife is about to get shut down by new club lockout laws).

Went to Byron Bay last night to shoot and enjoy Gene Peterson's new show in collaboration with Adam Page. All I can say is that the show was incredible, two of Australia's best young musicians absolutely killing it together with all the elements for amazing entertainment. The versus structure of the show having it like a battle was great too. I would highly highly recommend to anyone to check out this show while it's on tour.

Another Red Bull event exclusive to Australia currently, actually this was the premiere of this event which involves two producers being given one sample and then 15 minutes to produce a track from it to make the crowd bounce!!! Another great event. Winner Jeremy killin it!!!

For those not acquainted Wreckers Yard is a live art event and competition unique to Red Bull in Australia. It's a great chance for people of Brisbane to grab a slice of an underground culture (tattoo art, graffiti art and stencil artists among other mediums) which is usually pretty guarded. Also it's one of those jobs where I was lucky enough to be surrounded by my friends and good people. A great event and awesome work done by all artists especially winner Sofles (www.sofles.com). DOPE!!!

Flew down to Sydney to do a little exhibition and to shoot and enjoy Platform 3 B-boy comp put on my Nick Power (aka Rely). Was a dope jam, Skill at Will taking out the finals against Pussy Cat Balls in a tight battle. Full house, dope organizer and mad peeps = good times. And...crazy ass afterparty with Maths, Hideboo, Bass and Monsta got buck nasty!!

Last minute throw together shoot with some awesome help from model Jessica Simm and stylist Sarah Marion Birchley who was hot off the tarmac returning from Sydney (with a festival detour inbetween). These girls KILLL ITTTTT!!!!!. This was shot in a puddle in a car park in Paddington, scouted on the way to Sarah's house from West End. Great way to kill a few hours on a Sunday afternoon :D - Single speedlight, wire triggered, camera right at full power with a shoot through umbrella. Overcast cloudy 4pm sky in background (West) colour graded to a little warmer but it was warm in there anyway due to the sunlight. I graded it pretty much to how it looked on location ;)

Super fun super quick shoot at a roadside location / mosquito farm in Brisbane. Sarah was a great little model and we had to go quick to beat the bugs :P Flashgun - off camera with umbrella mixed with some pretty cool but unflattering ambient 4pm overcast light. I've punched out the backgrounds a little to bring up the greens and to bring up the Sarah's. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna use the shot in the water as part of a little exhibition planned for June in West End featuring fashion shots taken from roadside locations. FUN FUN FUNNNNN!!!!

haha, things don't usually go so well when you get kicked off location as soon as you have everything set up ready to shoot. We were shooting in at the Port of Brisbane with some shipping containers in the background, just something for fun. BUT apparently it's a private island run by POB = security can tell you to GTFO....Brisbane, there's nothing going on here but if you try to do anything it's not allowed. No shipping containers were hurt in the making of these images btw, cos we got kicked out on the first frame and found a rock wall instead. No rocks were hurt either, except for maybe their feelings because they got seriously showed up in attractiveness by Jessica Simm.

I've been trying to shoot in more difficult lighting conditions over the past few, including alot of broad daylight shots. This is difficult because the light in Australia is incredibly hard during the day in summer making for mean shadows and a dynamic range that will make a digital camera shit itself. Thanks to Anouchka and Tilly for being especially rad and walking over treacherous grounds to make the frame!!! yeyeeee!!!!

Just started work on a project with my brother Liam who is an insane 3d artist specialising in motion, but dipping into some stills stuff for this...these are the base plates for what is going to be a crazy looking artwork...stay tuned for updates!!! Tommy Ill / Tom Thum a good friend of mine, dope bboy, writer, beatboxer and MC, has been in town for the last few weeks performing with the Tom Tom Crew. We decided to head out last night to have a bit of a stab at using gelled flashes and try and come up with some new press shots and basically experiment with some lighting craziness...we tend to cruise the industrial areas on the outskirts of Brisbane to shoot and last night was no exception...tonnes of mozzies care of the wet weather and a couple of cool shots with the help of Selina Miles on lighting assist. A fun night - way more fun than the Ross River Fever / Malaria will be from all the bites...arrrrghhhhh.......

These strange little guys are some sort of steel fabrication but they seemed to love reflecting a tonne of light...shot on a long exposure with multiple pops from 3 flash units handheld by myself, Sel and Tom from behind the structure...some cool lighting mixes when adding pops from different gels to the same tubes...yeyahh!!

I've been meaning to shoot some pics of BBoy Brhino for a while now and finally got the chance to catch up...we wanted to go for something a little different so we jumped up on the roof of his house to get some snaps against the stormy background as the clouds rolled in. Luckily we got down before the rain came through!! Ended the shoot with some standard stuff - and Brian doing a flag hahaa!
